
Ask ten boat owners what they put on their hull and you will get three answers: wax, sealant, or ceramic coating. All three do the same basic job — put a sacrificial layer between the gelcoat and everything trying to destroy it. Where they differ is how long that layer survives an Illinois season, and how much work it takes to renew.
This is a practical comparison rather than a sales pitch. There are boats where a ceramic coating is money well spent and boats where it plainly is not, and the difference comes down to a few specific things about how you use and store the vessel.
What you are actually protecting
Gelcoat is not paint. It is a thick pigmented resin layer, and unlike automotive clear coat it has no UV inhibitor built to last decades. Left unprotected in the sun, the resin at the surface breaks down and releases loose pigment particles. That is chalking — the white powder that comes off on your hand.
Once chalking starts, it accelerates. The rougher the surface gets, the more it holds dirt and water, and the faster it degrades. Every protective layer discussed below is trying to prevent exactly that process. None of them reverse it — that is what compounding is for, and it has to happen first.
Traditional marine wax
Carnauba-based marine wax is the oldest option and still perfectly valid. It fills microscopic surface texture, gives a deep warm gloss, and sheds water well when fresh.
Realistic lifespan on an Illinois boat: a season, and often less than that on the sun-facing surfaces. Wax is a soft, organic layer. Heat softens it, UV breaks it down, and every wash takes a little more off. A boat that gets used most weekends through summer will typically be down to bare gelcoat on the deck and upper hull sides by autumn, even if the shaded areas still look protected.
Where it makes sense: boats that are covered and trailered, kept for a short time, or being prepared for sale. It is the cheapest way to get a genuinely good-looking finish, and if you are happy to redo it each spring it is a reasonable long-term approach.
Synthetic sealant
Sealants are polymer-based rather than natural. They bond more tightly to the gelcoat than wax sits on it, and they resist UV and heat considerably better.
Realistic lifespan: most of a season to a season and a half, so typically one Illinois summer plus the winter in storage. That last part matters more than people credit — five months in a yard is five months of protection you either have or do not.
Where it makes sense: most owners, most of the time. It is the sensible middle option: noticeably more durable than wax, far less expensive than ceramic, and it does not require the same level of preparation underneath.
Ceramic coating
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that cures into a hard, semi-permanent layer chemically bonded to the gelcoat. It is not a thicker wax — it is a different category of product that becomes part of the surface rather than sitting on top of it.
Realistic lifespan: several seasons, depending on the product and how the boat lives. That is the headline, but the more useful benefit is day-to-day: coated gelcoat releases dirt so readily that waterline scum which used to need scrubbing often comes off with a rinse and a wipe.
What it does not do: a coating will not stop physical scratching, it will not hide existing oxidation, and it will not prevent waterline staining altogether. It makes that staining far easier to remove, which in practice is what owners actually notice.
Where it makes sense: boats you are keeping for several years, boats stored outdoors, boats slipped all season, and darker hulls — which show oxidation faster and benefit most from a hard UV-resistant layer.

The part that matters more than the product
Here is the thing most comparisons skip: what goes underneath decides the result more than what goes on top.
Protection is transparent. It seals in whatever surface it is applied to. Put an expensive ceramic coating over chalky, oxidised gelcoat and you have locked in a dull finish for several seasons — and removing it to fix the problem means abrading off a coating you paid for.
That is why any honest quote for a coating includes correction: compounding to cut back the oxidised layer, then polishing to refine the finish, then the coating. On a neglected hull that preparation is the bulk of the work and the bulk of the cost. The coating itself is the quick part.
If a coating quote seems dramatically cheaper than others, this is almost always where the difference is.
What we would recommend, honestly
Selling within a year or two? A good sealant. You get the visual result without paying for durability you will not be around to use.
Trailered, covered, used a handful of weekends? Wax or sealant each spring is entirely sufficient. A ceramic coating on a boat that already lives protected is spending money to solve a problem you do not have.
Slipped all season, or stored outdoors? This is where coating earns its keep. Constant water contact and constant UV are exactly the conditions that destroy wax in weeks.
Dark hull? Lean towards coating regardless of the above. Dark gelcoat runs hotter, oxidises faster and shows it more obviously.
How the job runs

Frequently asked questions
Can a ceramic coating go straight over my existing wax?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding we run into. Coatings need to bond directly to bare gelcoat. Any wax or sealant residue sits in the way and stops that bond forming, so the surface has to be stripped and decontaminated first. Applying over old wax is the main reason coatings fail early.
What is the difference between compounding and polishing?
Compounding uses an aggressive abrasive to cut away the damaged surface layer — it removes material. Polishing uses a fine abrasive to refine what compounding left behind and restore clarity. Chalked gelcoat needs both, in that order. A boat in good shape often needs only the polish.
Does a coating make the hull slippery through the water?
Not in any way you will feel. The layer is measured in microns and any hydrodynamic effect is negligible at the speeds recreational boats run. The genuine benefit is above the waterline, where dirt and scum release far more easily.
Can I use normal car soap on a coated boat?
Use a pH-neutral marine wash rather than a household detergent or an aggressive degreaser. Strong alkaline cleaners will shorten the life of any coating considerably. A neutral soap, a soft mitt and a rinse is genuinely all a coated hull needs.
Does the coating go on the trailer as well?
It can, and on aluminium trailers it is worth considering because they take constant water and road salt. It is priced separately since trailer condition varies so much, but combining it with a hull coating is usually the efficient way to do it.
How soon can the boat go back in the water?
Coatings need curing time before immersion — typically at least a day, sometimes longer in cool or damp conditions. We will give you a specific window when the work is booked. Wax and sealant have no meaningful wait.
Is a marine ceramic coating the same product used on cars?
Related chemistry, different formulation. Marine coatings are built for constant water immersion, harsher UV exposure with no shade, and gelcoat rather than clear coat. Using an automotive product on a hull tends to disappoint by the second season.
My gelcoat is faded but not chalky. What do I need?
That usually means light oxidation that has not progressed to releasing pigment. A single-stage polish followed by a sealant will typically bring most of the colour back, and it is far cheaper than a full correction. This is exactly the point at which acting saves real money.
Will it stop bird droppings and fish blood staining the deck?
It gives you more time, which is the practical benefit. On unprotected gelcoat, acidic contaminants start etching quickly. On a coated surface they sit on top and rinse off — provided they are dealt with in a reasonable timeframe rather than left for a fortnight.
Can you coat just the topsides and leave the bottom?
Yes, and it is the usual approach for trailered boats. The bottom below the waterline is a different problem with different products, particularly on anything that stays slipped. Coating the topsides and rails is where the visible benefit is.
