How Much Does Boat Detailing Cost in Illinois? (2026 Guide)

Unlock the Luxury of Professional Car Interior Detailing

If you have asked around for a boat detailing quote in Illinois, you have probably noticed that nobody gives you a straight number over the phone. That is not evasiveness. A 17-foot fishing boat that lives under a cover and a 24-foot pontoon that has sat uncovered through three Illinois winters are completely different jobs, and any detailer who quotes both the same is guessing on one of them.

This guide explains what actually drives the price, so when you get a quote you can tell whether it is fair and what you are paying for. We detail boats across Champaign County and the surrounding area, and everything here is based on how these jobs really run.

Boat detailing is priced by the foot, not by the hour

Almost every detailer in the Midwest works from a per-foot rate, then adjusts for condition. Length is the starting point because it decides how much surface there is to compound, polish and protect. A 24-footer is not slightly more work than an 18-footer — it is roughly a third more hull, a third more rail, and usually a bigger interior on top of that.

What moves the per-foot rate up or down is condition. The same 20-foot boat can be a straightforward wash-and-wax or a two-day oxidation recovery, and the gap between those two jobs is enormous.

The five things that decide your quote

1. Length and layout

Overall length sets the baseline. Layout then adjusts it. Pontoons have a lot of rail, fencing and deck relative to their length. Cuddy cabins and cruisers add an enclosed interior that has to be cleaned separately. Bass boats have carpet, compartments and livewells that take time nobody accounts for until they are doing it.

2. Oxidation level on the gelcoat

This is the single biggest variable, and it is the one most owners underestimate. Gelcoat that still shines needs a wash, a light polish and a coat of protection. Gelcoat that has gone chalky — where you run a finger across it and come away with white residue — needs compounding first, sometimes in two or three stages, before any wax or coating will hold.

Heavy oxidation can double the labour on the hull alone. It is also completely preventable, which is why an annual detail is far cheaper over five years than a restoration every third year.

3. The waterline stain

Illinois lake and river water leaves a hard brown or yellow band along the waterline. On a boat that has been slipped all season, this does not come off with soap. It needs a dedicated hull cleaner and, if it has been left for multiple seasons, mechanical work as well. Trailered boats that come out of the water after every trip usually have almost none of this, and that alone can be a meaningful difference in price.

4. Interior condition

Vinyl seating is where boats age fastest. Sun, sunscreen, water and food take a toll, and mildew gets into seams and stitching if the boat is stored damp. A clean interior that just needs wiping down is quick. An interior with mildew spotting across the seats is slow, careful work — and worth doing properly, because aggressive chemicals will strip the plasticiser out of marine vinyl and leave it brittle.

5. Protection level

What goes on at the end changes both the price and how long the work lasts. A traditional marine wax is the cheapest option and typically lasts a season. A synthetic sealant lasts longer. A ceramic coating costs the most up front and lasts several seasons, which usually works out cheaper per year if you keep the boat.

Why mobile boat detailing usually costs less overall

There is a hidden cost in shop-based detailing that nobody quotes you: getting the boat there. That means hitching up, towing across the county, dropping off, arranging a lift home, then repeating the whole thing to collect it. For most owners that is half a day of their own time, plus fuel, and a trailer trip the boat did not otherwise need.

We work at your storage location — your driveway, your yard, a storage lot, wherever the boat sits. We bring our own water and power, so nothing needs to be plumbed in or plugged in. The boat does not move, and you do not lose a Saturday.

It also means the work happens where the boat is stored, which matters more than people expect. A boat that gets detailed and then immediately towed home through road spray has lost some of the benefit before it is parked.

What a fair quote should include

Whoever you use, a proper quote should tell you four things: which specific services are included, what level of correction is being done to the gelcoat, what protection is going on at the end and how long it should last, and roughly how long the boat will be out of use. If a quote does not distinguish between a polish and a compound, you cannot compare it to anything.

Be cautious of any quote given without photos or a look at the boat. Oxidation and waterline staining simply cannot be judged from a description, and a number given blind usually gets revised upward on the day.

When to book

Two windows matter in Illinois. Spring, before launch — this is the busiest, and it is when a full detail makes the most difference because everything that built up over winter comes off before the season starts. Autumn, before storage — less obvious but arguably more valuable, because anything left on the hull over winter sits there for five months working into the gelcoat.

If you can only do one a year, do the autumn one. Boats deteriorate in storage far more than most owners realise, and it is cheaper to protect a good finish than to restore a bad one.

Getting a real number for your boat

Text a few photos to 217-418-4769 — one of the hull from the side, one along the waterline, and one of the seating. That is enough to quote accurately in most cases. We will tell you what the boat actually needs, which sometimes is less than people expect, and there is no deposit at any point. Payment is due when the work is finished and you have looked it over.

Frequently asked questions

Do you detail boats on the trailer or does it need to be off?

On the trailer is completely normal and how most of our boat work happens. We can reach everything above the bunks. The only part that needs the boat lifted is the very bottom of the hull below the bunk line, which is usually handled separately when the boat is out for other work.

How long does it take to detail a boat?

A wash and wax on a smaller trailered boat is typically a few hours. A full detail on a mid-size boat is generally a full day. Oxidation restoration on a badly chalked hull can run into a second day, and we will tell you that before starting rather than after.

Can you get the brown stain off my waterline?

In most cases yes. Fresh-season staining usually comes off with a dedicated hull cleaner. Staining that has been left across multiple seasons has bonded into the gelcoat surface and needs mechanical correction as well, which is quoted separately because the labour is genuinely different.

Is ceramic coating worth it on a boat?

It depends how long you are keeping it. Ceramic costs more up front but lasts several seasons, releases waterline scum far more easily, and makes routine washing dramatically quicker. If you plan to sell in the next year, a good sealant is the more sensible spend.

Will you damage the vinyl seats?

Not with the right products. The risk with marine vinyl is harsh cleaners stripping out the plasticiser, which leaves seats stiff and prone to cracking a season later. We use marine-specific products and condition afterwards, which is the part most DIY cleaning skips.

Do you need access to water and electricity?

No. We arrive fully self-contained with our own water supply and power. All we need is enough room around the boat to work, which for most driveways and storage lots is not an issue.

My boat has been sitting uncovered for years. Is it too far gone?

Very rarely. Gelcoat is thick, and chalking is a surface condition — underneath it there is usually a good finish waiting. Heavily oxidised boats are some of the most dramatic before-and-afters we do. What we cannot fix is gelcoat that has been compounded so many times it has worn through, so it is worth addressing sooner rather than later.

Should I detail before or after winter storage?

Before, if you have to choose. Contaminants left on the hull sit against the gelcoat for five months in storage and do their damage slowly through the winter. Detailing in spring cleans up the result; detailing in autumn prevents it.

Do you clean the boat cover as well?

Covers and biminis can be cleaned and re-treated, and it is worth doing because a mildewed cover puts moisture and spores straight back onto a clean interior. It is quoted separately since fabric condition varies enormously.

How often does a boat need detailing?

Once a year covers most trailered boats in Illinois, timed around storage. Boats kept in a slip all season, or stored outdoors uncovered, benefit from twice — spring and autumn — because they take considerably more UV and waterline exposure than a covered trailered boat.
